GUITAR VIRTUOSO, SONGWRITER, & COMPOSER
Irish virtuoso guitarist Shane Hennessy has established himself as one of the leading guitarists on the world stage, known widely for his fingerstyle, flatpicking, and percussive guitar-playing approaches. His energetic live performances and his cinematically-vivid compositions tie in influences from Bach to Beyoncé – and everything in between! With a unique style of solo guitar playing that encompasses the range of a whole band – covering drums, bass, rhythm and lead lines – Shane builds a complete sonic world entirely on his own.
Shane has sold out a solo concert in the National Concert Hall in Dublin; released four highly-praised albums Zephyrus (2015), Marrakech (2017), Rain Dance (2020), and Idircheol (2020); has worked with Bill Whelan (composer of Riverdance), and has done extensive international touring across Europe, Russia and the USA, including a performance at the prestigious MerleFest, and numerous appearances on the Irish & Celtic Festival circuit in the USA (Milwaukee Fest, Kansas City Fest, & many more).
Tommy Emmanuel, with whom Shane has shared the stage, has said that Shane "transcends the guitar the same way Muhammed Ali transcended boxing". Irish Music Magazine have referred to him as "one of the most exciting live performers of his generation, with an ability to move between styles and genres with ease."
Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, Shane has released two studio albums. His third studio album Rain Dance was released on a livestream concert supported by Culture Ireland's #IrelandPerforms initiative in April 2020. In December 2020, Shane released Idircheol, an album of original Traditional Irish-influenced music composed specifically for solo guitar, a project supported by The Arts Council (Ireland). Shane also contributed to the TG4/Fibín/Creative Ireland production 'Samhlú' as a featured artist and a musical contributor, which aired in December 2020, and was awarded a Music Network Music Capital grant in late 2020.
In 2021, Shane launched his teaching channel The Fretboard Atlas in partnership with leading teaching platform TrueFire.com. To date this year he has appeared as a featured artist on both Temple Bar TradFest (Dublin Castle Sessions) and Fleadhfest TV. Shane is currently working on an album of music inspired by the thumbpicking guitar style as pioneered by Chet Atkins, as well as his début vocal release.
With the COVID-19 pandemic still ongoing at time of writing, all scheduled touring and performances for 2020 and early 2021 have been postponed. Dates are slowly being re-announced, but are subject to change as local, national, and international restrictions are revised. Please subscribe to the ShaneHennessy.ie mailing list for more information about rescheduled dates once that information becomes available.
Until touring begins again, please be sure to tune into Shane's online performances, which are usually broadcast live on YouTube and various social media platforms. These livestreams will be listed on the Shows page and can be accessed via the respective ticket links for each date listed.
